Unemployed in Lockdown? What can you do?

2020 hasn’t been an easy year for pretty much everyone worldwide.

In Britain the Government employer incentives such as the Job Retention Scheme (Furlough) has helped some of those in need but not those that are either now or were already unemployed.

Despite additional Government schemes for many the only option is to get another job. However due to national lockdown a fairly simple process has been made incredibly difficult. Many UK and international businesses are in hiatus not only in terms of day to day running but on recruitment freezes until the lockdown is over.

This has increased competition for those few jobs remaining. This blog is designed to show any individuals looking for a new role simple steps that could make you more attractive to prospective employers not only during lockdown but after.

Rewrite your CV

Now’s the time. That annoying job you have been putting off for so long, it needs rewriting, redrafting etc. checked for spelling and grammar errors.

  • Check for breaks and changes in font (one font all the way through)
  • Use a professional font (can’t go wrong with “Times New Roman”)
  • Redraft your CV to make it more relevant to each job you apply for
  • Highlight relevant information such as awards and qualifications
  • List your career history from most recent to oldest as it reads

Hiring managers on average look at each CV for less than 10 seconds, so make sure they can see what they need to.

When did you last speak to your reference?

It is so important to check in with your reference, do they even know they are potentially getting calls?

  • Do you have the right number and email anymore?
  • Is this reference the most relevant to the job you are applying to?
  • If not, find a new reference. Who else can you contact?

In a lot of ways this is the easiest time to make contact with people so use this lockdown period to check in with those that are usually incredibly busy (usually your old boss).

How can you improve yourself at home?

With all the time we have at the moment it might as well be used effectively.

Check your Social Media

So many applicants forget that their thoughts, beliefs, embarrassing photos etc. are more accessible than ever before. In a recent study 70% of employers admitted to checking an applicant’s social media presence before making an offer.

  • Check your profiles privacy settings
  • Don’t forget old accounts or platforms you no longer use
  • If you don’t want to go 100% private, then utilise individual post privacy settings to ensure they are not accessible to anybody that you wouldn’t want to see them
  • Remember not everyone has to agree with you

Good luck in your job search and if you can think of any additional tips please don’t hesitate to comment on this post.
